Urban Nest Home Tour with Agent Andy: 6226 NE 9th Ave

In this series, Agent Andy Barlow tours listings by other Urban Nest agents. As he visits properties across the city you’ll get the inside scoop on our listings and pick up valuable insight from one of Portland's most discerning real estate professionals.

Classic Portland Cottage with Modern Design

This week I had the opportunity to tour one of Urban Nest’s newest listings. Located just a couple of blocks from the Woodlawn Triangle (home to one of my favorite bakeries, Woodlawn Coffee & Pastry), this two bedroom, two bathroom house is packed with modern upgrades and tons of style.

Built in 1927, the cottage at 6226 NE 9th Ave. offers an unexpected minimalist style thanks to the recent modernization it’s received, blending the old with the new in a compelling way. The house went pending after just 10 days with multiple offers above list price and it’s easy to see why.

“From the day it was listed it was just one of those homes that got a ton of attention… mainly, I think, because it's a little different,” explains the listing agent, Ray Massini. And he’s right, it is a little different, in all the right ways.

Walking up to the home you see a well-maintained cottage, but nothing out of the ordinary. That all changes once you get inside. The front door opens into the spacious living room, with a large bay window complete with window seat. The walls and trim are a crisp yet warm white and the floors are a dark-stained wood. What really grabs my attention though, are the vertical slats surrounding the stairway to the second floor. I’m reminded of midcentury and Scandinavian design. I love how the slats allow light to pass through over the stairs and into the adjoining office space.

As I continue through the home I find the kitchen and dining area. The space is a good size, and has been recently remodeled with a real attention to detail, style, and functionality. “It offers something more than dove grey paint and white subway tile backsplash,” Ray tells me. “The custom cabinets bring a modern spin on your traditional oak cabinetry with the addition of the black formica, clean lines, and modern hardware.” (And it’s a pretty swoon-worthy kitchen if I do say so myself.)

I finish touring the main level, including a large bedroom, a full bathroom that makes you feel like you’re in a very nice hotel and the aforementioned office space off the living room. I take the stairs up and find that the top floor is  dedicated entirely to the master suite, complete with another modern bathroom and a charming bedroom with wood-planked walls. (Have I just entered a modern cabin retreat? It feels like it!)

I finish touring the home and then take another walk through the house, this time with a focus on all the art and custom lamps and lighting. Not only is Ray a great listing agent who helped bring style to this home, he’s an artist, and the walls are packed with his work. And the cool lamps throughout the house, those are all designed by Ray’s partner, Jamey. Talk about the icing on the cake to make for a really memorable home tour.

Bummed you missed this one? Fear not, I can help you find the home of your dreams - although there is no guarantee the art or lighting will be quite as cool, but if you’re really lucky maybe Ray or Jamey could help change that after you get moved in.
