Nestled into southwest Portland between the Southwest Hills, Hayhurst, Hillsdale, and Healy Heights, Bridlemile straddles the Portland city limit such that the northern part of the neighborhood falls within the city proper, while the southern part of the neighborhood is considered an unincorporated part of Multnomah County.
Bridlemile is perfect for families looking for quiet neighborhoods and classic Portland forests and greenery. While the neighborhood can at times feel isolated due to the ivy-covered forests, the community comes together regularly to take care of the natural landscape in the neighborhood, in addition to spending time together at picnics and other activities.
Bridlemile Is a Forested Portland Wonderland
Tucked away from bustling urban life, Bridlemile is the perfect combination of secluded yet accessible living. While it only takes about 15 minutes to get from the heart of Bridlemile into downtown Portland, it retains the feeling of a woodsy town, void of the hustle and bustle of our growing metropolis.
The Bridlemile Creek Stewards regularly meet to help with stream habitat restoration around the Bridlemile neighborhood. The group of volunteers helps with erosion control, water quality, and native wildlife protection. Because much of the Bridlemile neighborhood is part of the Fanno Creek Watershed, the community works hard to keep the habitat healthy.
The neighborhood has received multiple community service awards, and the woods around the neighborhood are healthy and full of multiple walking trails.
Get Lost Amidst the Southwest Trails
The Bridlemile neighborhood is home to some trails that are part of the SW Trails Group in Portland. A system of volunteer-maintained trails weave through the southwest hills of Portland, making it perfect for folks who love the city but also love their time in the woods. The neighborhood has 34 acres of parkland, with Albert Kelly Park and Hamilton Park comprising 22 of those acres.
While Bridlemile is a perfect neighborhood to spend time walking or hiking around the woods, it’s not necessarily an ideal neighborhood for folks without a car. The overall walkability score of Bridlemile is 38 out of 100 due to its distance from the city and lack of commercial strips.

The Bridlemile Elementary School consistently receives high scores on Oregon’s school “report cards.” The large school campus borders Hamilton Park, with two baseball diamonds, lots of green space, and a play structure. Hamilton Park plays hosts to a variety of community events, including movies in the park, National Neighborhood Night Out, and community trail walks.
Alpenrose Dairy farm, just three minutes down Shattuck Road in Hayhurst, is home to a 4-H Discovery Farm, a bicycle racing track, and vintage storefronts, which get a holiday makeover every year. The Southwest Community Center is also in fairly close proximity to Bridlemile. A five-minute drive south will bring you to the community center, complete with a pool, gym, and drop-in child care.
