Mother's Day Off-the-Beaten-Path in PDX

Creative Ways to Enjoy Mother’s Day in PDX

Each May, families around the United States celebrate the mothers in their lives. Often, U.S. Mother’s Day traditions involve lovely flowers, breakfast in bed, small gifts, and thoughtful cards. And in other parts of the world, Mother’s Day Traditions take different forms — in India, for example, mothers are celebrated with weeklong festivals.

Here in Portland, there are a lot of different ways to celebrate moms. If you’re looking to show mom you care in a new, unconventional way, here are a few off-the-beaten path Mother’s Day activities in Portland.

Brunch at the Side Yard Farm

Ready to put a fun spin on Mother’s Day brunch? Take mom to one of Portland’s best urban farms, the Side Yard Farm. Located in the farm-friendly Cully neighborhood, the Side Yard Farm is known for serving delicious farm-to-table meals in a quaint family-style picnic setting.

This year, the menu will feature a “seed-to-plate brunch experience with three family-style courses highlighting the abundance of edible flowers.” Pop-tarts with chevre icing and marigold dust? Yes please!

Run Mama Run

If you and your mom bond over a healthy lifestyle or outdoor activity, sign up for Portland’s annual Mother’s Day run: Run Mama Run! Hosted for 10 years running, this race supports the Mother & Child Education Center. Registration includes entry to in the 10K or 5K stroller-friendly run/walk, a commemorative t-shirt, light breakfast, and a morning spent touring the hills of Mount Tabor. And it’s all for a great cause, benefitting the moms in our community!

St. John’s Bizarre

Another way to celebrate Mother’s Day in Portland — attend the St. Johns Bizarre! Instead of shopping ahead of time and picking out a gift for the mom in your life, let your lady pick out her own gift from one of the dozens of vendors.

Known as a beloved Portland tradition, “the Bizarre brings music, crafts, and food to the crowds attending the St Johns Parade, now in its 56th year.” With free music, great food, and tons of local artisans, there’s something for every kind of mom to enjoy!

Blooming Moon Wellness Spa

If you’re celebrating a mom-to-be this Mother’s Day, show her a little love by purchasing a “Pampered Mama Package” from Blooming Moon Wellness Spa, an all-female staffed spa. By purchasing the “Pampered Mama Package,” you gift your mama-to-be with a mini-facial, head and neck treatment, a pedicure, and an hour-long aromatherapy massage. Treat her, she’s worth it.

Day Trip to Astoria

Nothing shows love like a well-planned itinerary and a weekend getaway, so why not surprise mom with an out-of-town adventure? Book a night at Astoria’s Commodore Hotel, and treat mom to a Mother’s Day weekend trip to the coast. Once you’re there, enjoy fish and chips at Bowpickers, a brew from Buoy, and a casual morning stroll through the Sunday market. Whether your mom is a history buff, a maritime lover, or in search of a hike, Astoria has it all.
