Portland Is Coffee Central. Here Are Some of Our Favorite New Neighborhood Shops

Coffee Lovers of the World, Unite!

Portland’s delicious coffee scene is not a well-kept secret. If there are two things that Portland knows how to do well, it’s craft beer and craft coffee. With that in mind, we’ve created a guide for the best coffee shops in Portland, organized by neighborhood so that you always know where to get your caffeine fix no matter where you find yourself in the city.

While it’s fairly widely accepted that Portland has four quarters—northeast, southeast, northwest, and southwest—we’ve added a fifth quarter to include north Portland, a quadrant of the city that just has too many coffee shops to skip out on. For this map, we’ll start in the northernmost quadrant and move south.

North Portland

If you are looking for a reason to move to North Portland, the Skidmore Bluffs and the St. John’s Bridge should lure you right in. But if you need more convincing, just take a look at the coffee scene. Find Cathedral Coffee just south of Saint John’s on N. Willamette Street. This cozy Australian-style coffee shop is perfect for both sit-down customers and coffee addicts on the go.

Other great spots in North Portland include Fresh Pot on North Mississippi, Affogato on North Lombard, and Prince Coffee on North Willard. Check out our blog post that focuses solely on the best coffee shops in NoPo for a more detailed description of some of these scrumptious coffee shops.

Northeast Portland

Southeast of North Portland, you’ll find Northeast Portland. For a Scandinavian coffee fix, try Guilder, which specializes in both coffee and yummy porridge, toast, and other snackables. Case Study Coffee on Alberta is an absolute staple for folks who live in or around the Alberta Arts District, or people who just need a shot of espresso after a delicious meal at Bollywood Theater.

Seven Virtues Coffee Roasters at the Zipper on NE Sandy is perfect for folks in a Northeast Neighborhood with dietary restrictions. The coffee bakeshop is full of delicious vegan and gluten free options. The homemade coconut milk is an absolute must for folks avoiding dairy in their lattés.

Southeast Portland

Tov Coffee is probably one of Southeast Portland’s most unique coffee joints. Located in a converted double decker bus on Hawthorne Street near the infamous House of Vintage, you can choose between delicious Turkish style coffee, or just opt for a traditional cappuccino.  Shop pretty jewelry and other knick knacks while you sip your coffee in this shop decorated with warm, homey jewel tones.

If you’re looking for a shop with more primary colors involved in the decor, check out Never Coffee on SE Belmont. A colorful shop with clean and crisp interior design, Never Coffee has a wide variety of signature drinks to choose from, like their “Hug” drink, which features notes of cacao, smoked chiles, and cardamon.

Northwest Portland

When it comes to coffee in Northwest Portland, expect a scene similar to that of the real estate: quaint, family-friendly, and eclectic. Nossa Familia Coffee fits that bill to a tee—Portuguese for “Our Family,” the shop is owned by Brazilians who are serious about sourcing the best Brazilian beans for your delicious espresso drinks.

Barista is another essential Northwest Portland coffee shop, especially for folks looking at real estate in Nob Hill or around the ultra trendy NW 23rd street (also known as trendy third street). Owned by the founders of the infamous Albina Coffee shop with locations in NE and SE, Barista is known for exceptional crema and rotating roasts.

Southwest Portland

A booming real estate market, great schools, gorgeous greenery, and delicious coffee: Southwest Portland is the final frontier. Jola Cafe, located on SW Corbett, is an outpost of delicious coffee, tasty baked goods, Nutella-topped toast, and a good glass of wine. What more could you ask for?

If you’re looking for a traditional cup of coffee with a unique twist, check out Revolucion Coffee House on SW 6th Ave. Try sweet Mexican style horchata and munch on a delicious empanada in the cozy and colorful shop – you’ll be glad you did!
