Amazing DIY Updates for Under $100

Energize Your Portland Space on a Budget

We’ve all been there: you walk into a room of your home and immediately feel bored or uninspired. While room renovations and home makeovers may feel like a fantasy reserved for HGTV, there are plenty of ways to energize your space on a budget. Whether you’re staging your home to sell or just looking to fall in love with your house again, these tips will help you invigorate your home without breaking the bank.

A little bit of cash and a few hours spent here and there can result in big improvements to your space. And you don’t have to win the lottery or get chosen for a home makeover show to get the home remodel that you want - you can do it right now for cheap.

Create Shelving Out of Outdated Cabinetry

When it comes to renovation and remodeling, the kitchen can seem like one of the most overwhelming rooms to deal with. Given old appliances, dated countertops, or shabby cabinetry, you may feel like the kitchen is actually too big of a job to tackle for under $100.

Break out of that mindset by starting with a project that’s cheap and easy. You can transform your outdated cabinetry by taking the doors off of their hinges and painting the interior of the cabinets. You’ll be left with open shelving that feels light, airy, modern, and on trend.

Entryway or Mudroom Hangers

If you don’t have a mudroom in your home, you can create the feeling of one by installing cute hooks in your entryway to provide a space for people to store their winter layers. Choose your device - whether you want to use old dresser knobs for a vintage feel, or simple polished utility hooks.

Then arrange the hooks or knobs at heights that are convenient for both kids and adults. Depending on whether you use old knobs from around the house or invest in new hooks, this project could cost you as little as $35. If you are investing in new hooks, choose a style that has a rounded nub at the top. It protects your fabrics and results in a more secure hanging.

Go the extra mile by installing a shelf that will inspire people to neatly store their shoes underneath when they come in the door. Add a vintage wood crate for easily dropping in gloves and hats. These easy fixes can quickly turn a cluttered entryway into a fresh mudroom for little to no cash.

Update the Stairs

A carpeted staircase can sometimes seem like a bit of a relic from decades past. Switch out this look for something updated and fresh by taking out the old carpet, painting the stairs and installing a chic carpet runner (you just need a staple gun!). Be sure to give your stairs a good cleaning and sanding before you begin painting and installing your runner of choice. You can check out a full tutorial on how to do this project at Sand and Sisal.

After the carpet is removed, you can also opt to simply sand and strip the steps before priming and painting. Remodelaholic has a great tutorial for painting and staining a once-carpeted staircase for exactly $100.

Shed New Light on Your Space

Updating the light fixtures around your home can have a significant impact on the way the space feels. Ditch the overhead light in your bedrooms and living room in favorite of bright lamps that are all on the same convenient switch. Track lighting can run the length of a hallway to create mellow light in a space that doesn’t get much natural light.

Invest in new light bulbs to brighten up dark corners. Choose light bulbs with warm light that don’t require too much energy. Energy-efficient light bulbs can end up saving you hundreds of dollars through the years. Halogen incandescent, fluorescent, and LED are all good options.
