January is officially Portland Music Month, and to celebrate MusicPortland has curated 31 days of performances at 12 local venues featuring over 100 music acts. Get tickets to hear extraordinary live music that will light up the winters at venues all over Portland. MusicPortland is an advocacy group that supports independent artists by creating space and economic opportunities to unite Portland’s music community.
O-Shogatsu, Japanese New Year
January 8th | Portland Japanese Gardens
O-Shogatsu means “standard month.” “Standard,” in this instance, means the standard a person sets during the first days of the first month of the year. During O-Shogatsu, people celebrate the start of a new year and hope for happiness and prosperity in the months ahead. Traditional decorations and activities include hishimai (lion dance) at 10:45 a.m. and 11:45 a.m., presentations of a hatsugama, the first tea ceremony of the year, at 1:30 p.m. and 2:00 p.m., and a sumi-e, Japanese brush painting workshop. During the event, Portland Coffee Roasters will be serving free coffee to visitors.

MLK BREAKFAST
January 16th | Holiday Inn Express & Suites Portland-Jantzen Beach
After two years of celebrating virtually, the community can now come together in person at the Holiday Inn in Jantzen Beach. The Skanner Foundation again invites the community to share breakfast and celebrate the life, work, and vision of civil rights icon the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. with its 37th annual breakfast celebration. This year’s line-up is no less impressive. In addition to inspiring words from elected officials, you’ll hear from previous student scholarship winners and enjoy local musical talent.
Rose City Classic Dog Show

The Rose City Classic Dog Show is one of the largest and most popular dog events in the United States. At Rose City Classic, more than 170 AKC breeds compete in conformation to earn championships, Best of Breed and Best in Show!
Chinese New Year
January 21st- February 5th | Lan Su Chinese Gardens
Visit Lan Su to experience the most colorful and joyous Chinese festival during the garden’s 16-day Lunar New Year celebration. By the Lunar Calendar, the Lunar New Year celebration of the Year of the Rabbit begins on Jan. 21, 2023, and ends on Feb. 5, 2023. The festival features cultural performances, festival decorations, craft activities, audio tours, Year of the Rabbit Scavenger Hunts, and much more.
