Urban Nest Design Tip of the Week: Cozy & Stylish Bedding in NW Portland

Environmentally-Conscious Bedding That's Sure to Elevate Your Bedroom Style

In this series, we share simple DIY solutions for maximum design impact, brought to you by our very own Agent Andy Barlow.

This week my design tip takes us over to NW 23rd to see the new Parachute bedding shop. This is Parachute’s first brick and mortar store outside their headquarters in California and I must say we are very lucky to have them here. Tucked inside an old house, this store isn’t huge, but it’s cozy and filled with soft linens, pillows, robes, and towels, and once you’re in there it’s not easy to leave (especially with the inviting corner sofa just begging for you to sit and hang out for a while).

Parachute offers a selection of timeless bedding and towels, along with some cute toss pillows. I chatted with Sam Lang, the store’s assistant manager, and she told me what makes this brand so special.

Q: What makes Parachute bedding worth checking out, and what makes it unique?

Sam: The biggest thing that sets us apart is our Oeko-Tex certification, meaning our manufacturing process surpasses the highest standards in quality and environmental protection. We don't use toxic chemicals or synthetic dyes on any of our products so our customer is getting pure fibers that actually get better and better over time. You'd be surprised how many chemicals are used in the bedding world, even when things are labeled “organic." We use 100% long-staple Egyptian cotton for our Percale and Sateen, pure European flax for our Linen, and 100% Turkish cotton for our Towels. We really just keep things simple and focus on quality! Our products come in neutral colors and are easy to care for so there's no fuss.

Q: Is there any benefit to shopping at the brick and mortar vs going online?

Sam: Obviously being able to see and feel the product in person is a huge benefit. Our showroom managers here in Portland have Interior Design backgrounds so we are able to help customers work with existing elements in their home and create the look they want. We have multiple fabrications and colors so we are able to point people in the right direction. Plus who doesn't love that instant gratification!

Q: Is there anything special about the Portland store specifically?

Sam: Well, the space is absolutely beautiful! Our Interior Designers Jessica Helgerson and Kayti Huffman were able to achieve the same vibe as our Venice [California] location while making it unique to Portland by sourcing locally. We really want people to spend time interacting and enjoying the space. (And we usually have wine & snacks so there's really no reason not to!) We also have a great backyard space where we host a variety of events ranging from barre classes to dinner parties. We post all of our events on our store Instagram @parachuteportland.

Q: You're a pretty new brand - what do you see happening in the future?

Sam: The Portland Showroom is our first location outside of our headquarters in Venice, CA. We started out as an E-commerce company but we love the idea of our customers getting to interact with the product in person. So with that in mind, we definitely could see ourselves opening showrooms in other cities. We want to do it in the right way for our brand and our customers so it’s something that will take time. We've had a great response so far in Portland and it’s been really fun introducing new people to the brand as well as seeing the excitement from those who have owned Parachute for years.

So, what are you waiting for?! Head over to Parachute and check it out, and give them a follow on Instagram so you can be sure to be aware of the next movie night or dinner party they host. This is such a unique store that loves to be involved with the community, so think of them first next time you decide to buy new bedding (or towels, or robes).

Parachute Portland is located at 820 NW 23rd Avenue.
